Michaela Joy Garecht was born on January 24th, 1979 and went missing on November 19th, 1988at just 9 years old. Michaela is a Caucasian female with blond hair, and blue eyes. Her ears are both pierced, her eyes slant slightly downwards and her teeth were slightly mottled at the time of her 1988 disappearance. All of Micheala’s siblings are tall, so there is a chance that she may be also, and her hair may have darkened as she grew older. There is a chance that she may also need vision correction. Micheala is
4’8, and weighs 75 pounds. Michaela was last seen wearing a white t-shirt with “Metro” printed on the front and images of people imprinted on its midsection, denim pants rolled above her knees, white anklet socks, flesh-coloured nylon stockings, black cloth shoes with brown plastic soles and three inch long pearl or white coloured earrings that resembled feathers.
On November, 19th, 1988, Michaela asked her mom if she and her best friend, Trina could go to a store 2 blocks away from her house to pick up some soda and candy. Michaela’s mom was hesitant at first as Michaela had only been to that store a couple of times with some teenage girls who lived next door, but her mom soon gave in and let her go- she watched Michaela and Trina leave on their scooters down the block after Michaela had told her mom that she loved her, and her mom replied back “I love you too, Michaela.”
Michaela and Trina headed down to Rainbow Market on Mission Boulevard in Hayward, California, resting their scooters by the market when they arrived. After they had finished in the market, Michaela noticed that her friend Trina’s scooter had been moved in the parking lot so she went to get it. As she grabbed the scooter, an identified Caucasian male grabbed her and forced Michaela into his vehicle at approximately 10:15 a.m. Trina went into the market to let someone know what had just happened, but Michaela’s kidnapper successfully drove away with her and they haven’t been seen since.
Michaela’s friend Trina called her dad, who then drove by Michaela’s house on his way to the store and told Michaela’s dad what had just happened. Michaela’s dad was in the driveway when he found out, and ran to the kitchen window to let Michaela’s mom know. Both Trina’s dad and Michaela’s dad drove to the store where they were met by police who had arrived just a bit earlier. Michaela is still missing to this day, and her kidnapper has never been identified.
This case has never become a cold case, and there have been many strong leads but there hasn’t been anything to indicate Michaela’s whereabouts. Both the Hayward Police Department and the FBI are keeping this case active.
The suspect seen in the car when Michaela was kidnapped was described as a man in his 20’s, with long, dirty-blonde hair and severe acne. He was seen driving an “older, tannish-gold, full-size sedan, boxy in shape, with body damage” and he was stated to have “Foxy eyes” from one witness.
Michaela’s mother has a website called ‘Dear Michaela’ which is where I found a lot of this information. Her website is dedicated to keeping Michaela’s case active as she’s desperately trying to find her daughter, and its so sad to see that she has no answers. Michaela would now be 40.
